Banana Leaf Rice

This is one of my most favourite things to eat. This is not doing it justice but what it is, is South Indian mixed rice eaten on a banana leaf. Similar to Nasi Kandar but the curries are very different and would be much closer to what they originally have in South India.

This is another thing that you can go vegetarian on, as the starter pack usually comes with rice, three types of veg and pickles with a dahl. You can always add on your meats and other things later. My favourite thing to add is the fried bitter gourd. At the end of your meal you can order a Rassam which is a sourish soup to aid digestion though some Indians have this while they eat as well.

You are going to experience the food style during the wedding as we are catering food from one of the more popular Indian restaurants who do banana leaf. The only thing unfortunately is that we are not serving it on a banana leaf.

Tosai | Dosa

Won’t spend too much time explaining what this is, as this is a very common south Indian dish which I believe many are used to seeing (thank you Dosa Hut King Street!)

Poori | Channa Bhatura

While Poori is something you can find easily in Melbourne it is probably not as popular as its cousin the Tosai/Dosa. Poori, it is a deep-fried bread made from unleavened whole-wheat flour that originated from India. Bhatura is a variant of poori and is often larger and served with chickpeas.

We will be having a station at the wedding serving this up.

Chapati

Chapati is a kind of flat bread roti and is one of the healthier versions of rotis out there especially compared to roti chanai which is yummy but is full of ghee and oil. It is a very common staple as a breakfast meal among Indians in Malaysia.

Putu Mayong (Idiyappam)

Putu Mayong is an Indian-style steam rice vermicelli cake served with grated coconut and sugar. There is a very famous Putu Mayong road store near the wedding venue. It is just along Dato Keramat Road next to Penang Times Square. My dad treats himself to this every now and then.
